Illiteracy and poverty are
linked. Approximately 75% of our students have
incomes that are below the poverty line.
The mission of ReadWest is to
change lives and to change our community for the
better by providing Basic Literacy, Computer
Literacy and English Language Acquisition to our
adult students.
At ReadWest we evaluate our
student’s needs, provide group classes and match
students with volunteer tutors to enable our
students to reach the goals that they set for
themselves. “Learn English…Read to my child…Get my
GED...Become an American Citizen…Open my own
Business” – these are some of the goals that our
students have reached for and achieved. The American
dream is already theirs. We give them the gift of
literacy to help make their dream of full
participation in our society a possibility.
Our donors and corporate
sponsors enable us to train our tutors and provide
all the materials AT NO CHARGE to our students.
With the help of the NM
Coalition on Literacy, each of our tutors receives
18 hours of training in either Basic Literacy or
English as a Second Language before they are matched
with their students. They are truly the heroes,
meeting 2 hours every week with their students for
as long as it takes! About half of our students are
enrolled from one to two years. Through the
thousands of hours our tutors donate collectively
they are making an impact on illiteracy in our
community.
It is a privilege to work with
our very dedicated Board of Directors, Muncie Hansen
- our Program Coordinator, Tiffany Hamburger- our
Student Services Coordinator and this army of
volunteers who are making a difference in the lives
of so many. Thank you all for being a part of our
success story!
I hope that you will help us
also, by becoming one of our tutors, donating your
time, or supporting us with your gift, so that we
can continue open our door to all those in our
community who need our help.
Thank you.
